Comments: On this Holy Thursday I was remembering going with my lay reader-grandfather Ed Godfrey to clean the cemetery at All Saints' Church, Ponca Creek. Rarely the grounds were burned. Mostly the grass was raked and the graves cleaned. On Holy Saturday evening we would go to the cemetery and light kerosene lanterns on the family graves. As the horse drawn wagons would head home in the twilight in anticipation of the Easter sunrise service at the cemetery, I would look back and be so impressed with the the flickering lights on the graves in the near-darkness. No matter how dark our days, I wish all of you well with the greeting, Christ is Risen! Martin Brokenleg

Comments: Paul's and Virginia's words (from the diocesan email) concerning our friend, Fr. Bill Hibbert are so true. It was always a pleasure to share some time, some spirited conversation with Bill. Although he wasn't so much the "hugging" type, he embraced you with his loving manner and gentle spirit. The many ways in which Bill touched our lives will live on...as he takes his new place in "the communion of the saints."

Fr. Liam Muller will be teaching a class on the Letters of Paul. Fr. Muller taught this in Rapid City and was very well received. He was able to present the Pauline Letters in a way that was clarifying and refreshing. Those of you, who took the Exegesis Course, will find that this class builds nicely on what you have already learned. The Letters of Paul Class will be held at St. Mary’s, Mitchell, on Saturday, April 5th from 9:00am to around 3:00pm. Lunch will be provided. *Please note the date of this class, since there has been some confusion as to the actual dates. Fr. Paul Sneve will be teaching a class on the History of the Diocese of South Dakota, at the Cathedral in Sioux Falls on Saturday, April 26th from 9:00am to around 2:00pm (lunch provided.) You may find it useful to read “That They May Have Life” by Virginia Driving Hawk Sneve, but don’t worry if you can’t find a copy, since it is out of print. If your congregation has its own history, please feel free to bring it, as it will contribute to the class. Fr. Paul taught this class in Rapid City and used a time line as a teaching tool and then had participants add historical points from their own congregations/communities to it. Every time this class will be taught, more information will be added to the time line, until it becomes an accurate (if not busy) depiction of the history of all if not most of our Diocese. We have planned these classes so that those traveling within a two hour radius of each class will be able to participate. If you are traveling from outside the area, we can not provide lodging. We are not charging any tuition for this event, but will ask for a free will offering to help defray our costs. If you plan to attend either of these classes, please drop a line to Fr. Paul at stmatts@rushmore.com or else to St. Matthew’s PO Box 1606, Rapid City, SD 57709. If you live outside the 2 hour radius, but would like to have these or any other course taught within your area, please contact, Fr. Paul Sneve or else Mo. Mercy Hussey Hobbs.
